A very interesting introduction to "legal by design" concepts and reasonings.

Also it seems like the references would be interesting reading.

This discussion note does three things: (1) it explains the notion of ‘legal protection by design’ in relation to data-driven infrastructures that form the backbone of our new ‘onlife world’, (2) it explains how the notion of ‘by design’ relates to the relational nature of what an environment affords its inhabitants, referring to the work of James Gibson, and (3) it explains how this affects our understanding of human capabilities in relation to the affordances of changing environments. Finally, this brief note argues that ‘safer by design’ in the case of nanotechnology will require legal protection by design to make sure that human capabilities are reinvented and sustained in nano-technical environments.

A public warning...

The first book of this series is now free on Amazon. It is good. Think before you jump, as you may have to cash out for the rest of them.

By the way - there is an omnibus edition if you decide you must have them all.

And the author is worth following as well here on g+

Still going!

I still don't know what started it, but with the help of your reshares, Episode One is sitting at #21 in Sci-fi and #9 in Cyberpunk (for some reason). So if it's not too much trouble, let's keep it going around.

Europe seems to be reaching a post-religious state. Interesting differences between neighbor countries though.

Since children from christian families reject religion at a higher rate than those of muslim families islam may well at some point become the biggest religion over here. But only because all religion is dwindling away.

Americans please look at these numbers and also note that our kids do not need to shoot up their schools. More religion in school is not the answer. It goes much deeper into your society.

The death of a thousand licks

The death of a thousand licks

I got careless. Stupid.

I relaxed. Should have known better.

It was so quiet. I was on my knees, cleaning the lowest bookshelf. I never noticed the two black ninjas sneaking up on me.

I never even got to put up a fight. They had me on my back, pinned to the floor in a fraction of a second. Without a sound. The torture started immediately.

The death of a thousand licks is really a variant of waterboarding. It leaves you feeling like you are constantly about to drown. Whenever you think you are able to draw a breath a tongue gets jammed down you throat. With two of them in a coordinated attack I could not even collect my thoughts enough for any basic defense. I was dying. At some point I at least managed to get my phone out and get a picture. I wanted those who found me to understand what had happened.

And then they were gone. Like they had never been there. This single picture is the only proof of my near death.

What I learned from this QA session has given me unique insight and a new unified theory of earth shape that encompasses the round and flat ones. I am not certain how it extends to concave earth yet.

The problem: Flat earthers see the world as a sloppily programmed simulation where earth is definitely flat. By admitting that this is due to sloppy programming they do admit that the bigger lines of the simulation suggests a round earth. Right?

So, my new theory is that the computing power driving this simulation isn't unlimited. They have to prioritize. The AIs that are important to the purpose of the simulation are prioritized and see a world where all details are consistent and science makes sense. As AIs with support roles are removed further from the main purpose of the simulation the allocated compute resources result in a more and more "sloppy" world.

I am certain the purpose of the simulstion can be deduced by looking at the people living in the world described by conspiracy theories and those living in the self-consistent one. The number 42 may be involved.
