Status quo is uncomfortably close to these quotes from 1887.

Come on guys. We are better than this. Let us do what we can to eradicate "Set B". It is our job.

Sad, but not at all surprising.

  1. You'll go further calling out jerks when you accurately observe who has the position of power in society. It's not about being nice. It's about an end to dominator thinking and rape culture. But if you're fine with rape, by all means.

  2. Will Menta it's hard to see it at first. But as a man you never have to endure sexual harassment as a constant cloud hanging over you. You never have to fear random women commenting on your body, making suggestions. You never have to think "will that woman following me assault me if i take the shortcut through the park?". Even in the most liberal western societies this isn't a problem of the past. It's still too real, and it's so hard to believe we don't really see it.

Sadly, too many men behave as jerks. They trigger these fears without even knowing. Yes, there are female jerks, but few, if any, have the effect on men that male jerks have on women. There is a difference of several orders of magnitude.

That is why we men must handle our problem. Eradicate those notions of "entitlement" or "superiority" that gives men the idea that dominator behaviour is ok. Just saying there are female jerks as well does not fix anything. it just covers up and excuses the real problem.

  3. Will Menta  I am attempting to communicate to you the reality that birger monsen also described. By completely ignoring the privilege men experience in human society, that freedom from constant threat of physical violence, you are directly encouraging this problem.

It's fairly predictable though, that having come into a thread about language and issues of sexual violence with "but what about women being jerks too!" You'd get all pissy about having things clarified.

At this stage of the overall conversation, with the information and examples that get around on the 'net a billionty times a day, it seems highly unlikely that you'd be genuinely ignorant of this. You've had the boundaries drawn up by a woman and now you're stamping your little feet because your sense of entitlement has been infringed upon.

Call me what ever you like. I'm calling you an enabler.

  4. Will Menta  ROFL So you're wading around the internet with no idea as to subjects such as micro-aggression or the so called "missing stair effect" and wondering why people are not taking your "arguments" seriously. Have fun with that.

  5. Sorry, Will Menta . As I said, you have to wake up and smell the stink under our noses. I used to agree with you. I really did. I understand where you are. The big problem is that being white, male and heterosexual we never see any of this ugliness. Not until we learn how to look for it. Then you suddenly start seeing crazy, demeaning attitudes where you least expected it.

As Jane tries to tell you, there is a long history of oppression, of male entitlement. This makes the male jerks so infinitely more dangerous. They really believe that men have rights over women. Because that is what their families have shown them (especially bad in christian cults). What their friends have enforced through "jokes" and "boys are boys" behaviour. It is so easy for us to explain it away. but it actually enables and enforces those views as truths in some of us. They really believe that "everyone" agrees with them, because we allow this "joking". We men are never subjected to this. We cannot really understand it. Add to that a police and justice system that is infused with those same views and try to imagine life as a woman. That is why it is the male jerks who are the real problem. And why we have to acknowledge the ugly truth without any of that "it goes for the women too". no. It doesn't. Because they don't have all that history of enforcing it. All that history that makes it acceptable.

  6. Will Menta  I'm expecting you to stop over reacting and start considering the impact of the view you're throwing around.

  7. Probably expecting too much, by the looks.

  8. Will Menta  It seems you're still (deliberately?) missing the point. Your comments directly contribute to an imminent threat against my person. I respond by pointing this out. You then call me a jerk and childish. That's it, mate. If you are going to continue to stick your fingers in your ears and sing Lalalala well, fuck you.

  9. and again, Will Menta  - extend your social antennas. Listen.

There is a message in what she said. A message for you. That by not seeing and understanding the issues of male dominance, of micro-agressions you are passively supporting rape culture. Because those who do engage in it really believe they are entitled, and have a majority supporting them. Yes, it is crazy, but it is craziness built on hundreds of years of indoctrination within some families. Families of power.

I have tried discussing some of these issues with men who have twisted ideas from their parents, and it is quite hopeless. They really believe I am the minority, and they have the majority backing them. Because the majority is silent. Silent when they make their derogatory jokes about women, about homosexuals, about races. They don't understand that the silence is because we do not approve. We have to say it loudly.

Open your eyes, and see the ugliness around you. Let's fix this problem. It can be done.

  10. Since it's obviously necessary, here's one link explaining the "missing stair." Though why I'm having to do this is beyond me. Men are the victims. Give me a break.
