The worst time of the year for the dogs...

The question has surfaced again and again: What is wrong with Window 8?

The question has surfaced again and again: What is wrong with Window 8?

for me it's not so much what is wrong with win 8 (complete lack of visual cues, inconsistency, etc) as what is wrong with the big picture.

for apple it's a no-brainer. their market penetration on desktop is minimal. they 'own' the tablet market for now. Even if Android devices are now going to invade the tablet market as they have with the smartphone market it doesn't mean a slowdown for apple. the market expands so quickly apple can still grow. if they can make macbooks and imacs a natural choice for ipad owners needing a desktop ot laptop computer that would mean a lot to them. so it will make sense to make macos more ios-like.

what i don't get is microsofts logic here. they have no market penetration whatsoever on tablet or phone. they 'own' the desktop. Why risk the desktop market in a first attempt to get into tablets? "the ui formerly known as metro" can get good for tablets once they fix the usability issues. expect win 9 to be much, much better. but i cannot see how win 8 can become good for a desktop. it's just all wrong. they are forcing this unfinished tablet-centered and very inflexible ui on desktop users who had enough trouble with the upgrade from 98 to xp. and they are surprised they didn't sell a lot of win 8 pc's for xmas?

why not go the more 'natural' route? Live with fragmentation for at least the first release, with the new ui only on tablet and phone releases. fix the problems. experiment with how it would be received on desktop (release it as a free extension for the desktop OS).

imho gnome did a few mistakes with gnome 3 and the way it was released. but gnome-shell is doing it right where win 8 is doing it wrong. by offering a set of visual cues, basic behaviour and workflow that is consistent, but with a completely minimal desktop that can then be expanded into what you need on a desktop or a tablet.

:-D

What makes people interesting?

I would say having strong opinions, being free speaking, having a great sense of humor, intelligence in one of its many flavors... And probably a whole lot more.

A rather large percentage of my plusser friends are very open about being non-heterosexual. From what i see their struggles are very different around the globe. Even more of my plusser friends are heterosexual, but supportive of equal rights. I just want to give my support as well. We must respect each other. Feelings cannot be censored.

Christmas - ultimate payback time?

Christmas - ultimate payback time?

The church stole the pagan solstice celebration. Imagine the discussions and the worries as old traditions gave way or became twisted into christian-flavored caricatures.

Then Coca Cola redesigned St. Nicholas and the commercial onslaught started. Payback time! Every single worry the church has now is something they did on purpose to older beliefs.

How do people get crazy enough to become mass murderers?

How do people get crazy enough to become mass murderers?

First a disclaimer: I am in no way a psychologist or any other kind of professional on wetware. I am a computer geek/nerd/admin. You know what that means? Not exactly good on people skills. But here we go...

Questions have been voiced about why the mass murderers seem to be male, white middle class. A few possible explanations entered my mind today, centered on a few peculiarities in the american society as seen from the outside. I could be way off... Please don't feel insulted.

A psychologist claimed that a lot of the maya calendar hysteria was rooted in a need to fear something. To feel a contrast to our easy life. That without any fear in our lives we would go crazy.

And it struck me. The USA is the country of litigations. The country where everything has to be safe, or it will cost you. The country where people don't dare hold childrens birthday parties at home because they fear what would happen if a visitor hurt him/herself. Where playgrounds must be so safe the only reason children don't fall asleep is that they have never experienced a better one.

Add in double standards. Americans are extremely good there. Pretend to be so religious. Go to church. Because if you don't your environment will react. You can be the same person all you want, but if you don't pretend to be a good christian...

And remember to always be polite. Never, ever say a foul word or raise your voice. Talk behind peoples back instead of tackling them head on.

Do white middle class boys grow up with so few challenges and so few dangers that they have a bigger chance of going crazy? Do the double standards add to it? Do all kinds of minorities either have other family values or meet so many challenges that it actually saves them mentally? Do women meet so many challenges just for being women that they are saved? Or do they handle the problem differently?

Or is it just me who should go back to writing shell scripts instead of trying to understand people?

F18, realmd and Active Directory

F18, realmd and Active Directory

In Fedora 18 there is no need to mess around with winbindd to log into your work account anymore. SSSD in combination with the new realmd and the new gnome user manager can autodiscover kerberos domains and set up automagically. Active Directory is supported. Just make sure you have realmd installed and you should get 'Enterprise login' as a choice when setting up a new user. A dropbox should list all autodiscovered domains.

I tried this the day after the beta was launched, and I had to set selinux to permissive mode to get it working.

Nice feature for enterprise users!

Windows 8 and deceptive marketing

Windows 8 and deceptive marketing

"New style" (The user interface formerly known as Metro) apps are single-window apps. The option to show part of another app on the screen doesn't seem to work very well. In practice you are supposed to work in one app at a time, just like the old Finder OS on the original Mac.

Shouldn't the name be changed to "Microsoft Window 8" then? And the logo changed to a single square, not the current one that seems to imply 4 simultaneous windows on the screen?

With a 6 strikes rule making its way to the US, a 3 strike rule on the way in the UK and already effective in France, I have one proposal.

Could we say that this is ok if the same applies to the purported content owners? 6 erroneous takedown claims, and they are out? No more takedown claims ever?

With Scripps News Service issuing false takedown claims on Nasa-owned content monthly ( http://motherboard.vice.com/2012/8/6/nasa-s-mars-rover-crashed-into-a-dmca-takedown ) and other content not-quite-owners doing similar automated takedown claims all over the place it would get quiet very quickly...

Make your own wallpaper - a quick Gimp walkthrough

Make your own wallpaper - a quick Gimp walkthrough

First of all: Install Gimp. If you run Linux it should be in your repositories. For Fedora just do a 'yum install gimp'. For windows, get it from http://gimp.org

Start Gimp, and in the 'Windows' menu select 'Single-window mode'. This is usually easier to understand for beginners than the default mode.

'File' -> 'New...' and set the image size to match your monitor resolution. For me it's 1920x1200.

Now remember that if you make any mistake, hit Ctrl-Z to backstep until you  are back to where things went wrong. Then try again.

You now have a 'layer' called 'Background', and the color used to draw is set to black by default. Press the 'Bucket fill' icon at the left edge of your drawing and then click in the background. Great. Now you have a completely black wallpaper.

Next press the 'Text tool' icon (the letter), and then click on the black square at the bottom of the left hand icons and switch to a new foreground color. Click anywhere in your wallpaper and type something. Your text will be created in a new layer on top of the background. As you can see, it's way to small, so select your entire text, and then adjust font size and/or other attributes.

Switch to the 'Move tool' and let's place your text correctly. It's not enough to just click within the text you want to move, you have to actually hit one of the letters or you will move the background instead. Remember that ctrl-Z is the easiest way to redo a mistake.

We could be done here, but let's spice it up. Right click the text layer in the layer list at the upper right. Select "Layer to image size". Without this step some of the filters will resize your image to just the border around the text. Then try 'Filters' -> 'Alpha to logo' -> 'Alien glow'.

Now you have 2 new layers. You can turn layers on and off by clicking on the eyes to the left in the layer list. When you have the result you want, save using 'File' -> 'Save as' first. This saves a version in the gimp xcf format. This is the format you want if you want to re-edit, as it saves all those nice layers. Then 'File' -> 'Export...' and save in a format you can use as a wallpaper. .jpg or .png should do nicely. Exit Gimp, and select your new wallpaper the way you normally do on your OS. Enjoy your digital creation. Then go back to gimp and play around. Perhaps get the Gimp Paint Studio extension that brings more brushes and stuff for the artist in you.

Wonderful, bizarre, discomforting digital art.

I was just about to become a security threat!

It's a good thing airport security keeps changing the rules every time i travel. How else would they be able to stop me and show me how dangerous i could be.

Last time they told me that my old gilette razor was ok with the blade in the razor, but the extra pack of blades had to go. This time they had reconsidered, and even the blade in the razor had to go. Of course i appreciate that. Just think how easy it would be to hijack the plane wielding that razor blade between my fingertips. It would certainly make it easy to slash my way into the cabin. Wouldn't take me more than a week or three of hard work.

Some dogs need space

Some dogs need space

If you see a dog with a yellow ribbon on the leash this is a dog who needs some space. Please do not approach this dog or its people with your dog. They are indicating that their dog cannot be near other dogs. How close is too close? Only the dog or his people know, so maintain distance or give them time to move out of your way.
There are many reasons why a dog may need space:

Maybe he has health issues or is in training.
She may be a rescue dog being rehabilitated. The world can be a very scary place for these dogs.
He may have had a bad experience with another dog or just not like the kind of friendly dogs who always want to say “Hi!”
In short, a yellow marker on a dog means it needs a little space.

UK High Court dismisses Apple’s design arguments vs Samsung by referring to 50 examples of prior art
Apple's design patent claims have been dismissed by the UK High Court by simply referring to 50 designs that were previously created or patented, from before 2004. These include the Knight Ridder (1994), the Ozolin (2004), and HP’s TC1000 (2003). The court found numerous Apple design features to lack originality, and numerous identical design features to have been visible in a wide range of earlier tablet designs from before 2004.

With 50 examples of prior art dating back nearly 20 years, Apple has no such further claims to make!

The same easy case of simply showing prior art can simply be used by all other Android makers when defending themselves against bogus Apple patent lawsuits!

I have actually read a version 1.x book

It has literally been years and years since the last time i read a version 1.x book. You remember those with the old api? Where information was chunked into pages in hardware? The hardware was even based on dead trees!

It may be old fashioned, but it excels in one area; it is even better than e-ink in sunshine. Apart from that the drawbacks are countless. Like the awkward way you must hold it if you want to hold it in one hand. Bookmarks are a 3rd party addon. No searching. Awkward scrolling interface. And the list goes on.

Still, when the content is good none of this matters. The title was The Left Hand of God by Paul Hoffman. Highly recommended.

"Hilarious and all-too apt analysis of Mitt Romney in terms of quantum physics (in contrast to the old Newt-onian physics):

"Before Mitt Romney, those seeking the presidency operated under the laws of so-called classical politics, laws still followed by traditional campaigners like Newt Gingrich. Under these Newtonian principles, a candidate’s position on an issue tends to stay at rest until an outside force — the Tea Party, say, or a six-figure credit line at Tiffany — compels him to alter his stance, at a speed commensurate with the size of the force (usually large) and in inverse proportion to the depth of his beliefs (invariably negligible). This alteration, framed as a positive by the candidate, then provokes an equal but opposite reaction among his rivals.

"But the Romney candidacy represents literally a quantum leap forward. It is governed by rules that are bizarre and appear to go against everyday experience and common sense...

"Nevertheless, close and repeated study of his campaign in real-world situations has yielded a standard model that has proved eerily accurate in predicting Mitt Romney’s behavior in debate after debate, speech after speech..."

Romney's behavior is then explained in terms of various aspects of quantum theory. Truly funny for physics nerds.

Microsofts demands for certified hardware for win 8 are scary.

Microsofts demands for certified hardware for win 8 are scary.

http://www.softwarefreedom.org/blog/2012/jan/12/microsoft-confirms-UEFI-fears-locks-down-ARM/
On Intel they demand that the UEFI boot loader must support custom mode (where the owner of the device can add signatures for other operating systems) and that it must be possible to disable secure mode completely. This is reassuring for users of alternative operating systems, since any Win 8 certified system should then be unlockable at the UEFI level.

On ARM it is quite opposite. On ARM microsoft cannot be accused of being a monopolist, so on that platform they demand that UEFI must only be able to run in secure mode, and with no possibility for custom mode. Meaning no way to add new certificates. This means that certified win8 units running with ARM processors will be completely locked down to only run certified operating systems where the signature is preloaded from the manufacturer.

I see no demand here that vendors cannot preload certificates for other operating systems, so if this is really the future for ARM hardware then The Linux Foundation may want to coordinate a list of certificates for all linux distros and make these available for hardware vendors? That would give them a possibility to still be compliant with the microsoft demands, and at the same time allow us to boot linux. Hopefully the certificate list can still be legally updated by firmware patches from the manufacturer so support for new operating systems can be added that way?
